The Paris Climate Agreement, signed in 2015, was a historic moment in global efforts to combat climate change. The agreement aims to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, with a goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

One of the key elements of the Paris Climate Agreement is the concept of nationally determined contributions, or NDCs. NDCs are the commitments that each country makes to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to the global effort to combat climate change.

Each country is responsible for setting its own NDCs, based on its individual circumstances and capacity. NDCs are intended to be ambitious, but also achievable, and are reviewed and updated every five years.

The Paris Climate Agreement recognizes that developed countries have a greater historical responsibility for greenhouse gas emissions, and thus sets different requirements for developed and developing countries. Developed countries are expected to take the lead in reducing emissions and providing financial and technical support to developing countries.

The first round of NDCs was submitted in 2015, and many countries have since revised and updated their commitments. However, the global community has recognized that the current NDCs are not sufficient to meet the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.

In 2020, a virtual Climate Ambition Summit was held to encourage countries to submit updated and enhanced NDCs. Many countries, including the United States, Japan, and South Korea, made new commitments to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

While the Paris Climate Agreement and nationally determined contributions represent important steps forward in the global effort to combat climate change, there is still much work to do. The world is facing a climate emergency, and urgent action is needed to limit the impacts of climate change and protect our planet for future generations.

As individuals, we can all make a difference by reducing our own carbon footprints and advocating for policies that support a sustainable future. But it will take a concerted global effort, led by governments and supported by businesses, communities, and individuals around the world, to achieve the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement and ensure a livable planet for all.
